Robotics Combat Event

August Annihilation 08-28-21

Join us at August Annihilation! Our goal is to promote interest in engineering and design through the construction of small “combat robots” and testing those designs in a friendly environment. We have a rule-set that is limited compared to other groups to keep the cost to participate at a reasonable level, while still allowing for lots of variety in design and capability.

August Annihilation 08-28-21

August Annihilation General:

The founding members of MACROBots (Maryland Area Combat Robotics Organization) and the Maryland Meltdown started putting the group together in 2018 as a way to build STEM interest and self-confidence in their kids. It quickly became apparent that there would be a greater appeal.

As an organization, our focus is going to be to promote a spirit of cooperation and good sportsmanship, with teams helping each other to progress in skill and to keep the fun in the competition. We intend to make open-source all of our designs so that interested participants do not have to start from scratch, and we are also happy to assist in the design and build process for those who need/want it.

We want everybody to be able to build, bash, break, and learn.

August Annihilation Event Details:

Unall{0}cated Space, the venue, will have cold water and Gatorade available for the suggested donation of $1 per bottle. Any donation to help the venue is greatly appreciated, and will make holding events there easier in the future.

In order to comply with the current COVID rules in Maryland, Anne Arundel County, and the rules of the venue, at the time of this posting (June 22, 2021), please review the following.

  • Please do NOT attend if you are feeling sick, running a fever, or have any other symptoms of COVID.
  • Wear your mask indoors.
  • Pits will be separated by at least one parking space.
  • Please maintain a 6 foot physical distance in the pit area.
  • 30 person maximum occupancy in the building, and no limit outside per UAS/Anne Arundel County rules.
  • We will be allowing spectators indoors, provided the total occupancy does not exceed 30.

August Annihilation Check in procedure:

  1. Fill out the bot check-in form This can be completed at any time after your arrival.
  2. Take your bot and the bot check-in form to the check-in station.
  3. At the check-in station, the bot will be weighed, B roll footage taken, and a failsafe check performed. The bot check-in form will be filled out and collected by a staff member of MACRO.
  4. Pay and leave the bot check-in form with the cashier.

Please see MACRO Robot Construction Specifications for construction specifications. There has been a minor update to the event rules. Please follow this link and note section 4.4.1

  • The least dangerous robot goes in the box first. The most dangerous in the box last.
  • Also, the most dangerous bot comes out first, if at all possible. Followed by the least dangerous bot.
  • We’ll have someone call the next match and the on-deck match.
  • We will also try to post the current brackets and next fight within the Discord event channel.
  • We’ll have 20 minutes between matches for any one bot, so towards the end, we will likely be having grudge matches to fill time.
  • No late hits. If the other bot is disabled, ask before you hit them again. Basically, be polite.
  • Have fun, play safe.

All bots will be required to follow safety rules and pass a safety check.

Other Safety Rules:

  1. If a battery becomes exposed, the match is over. This is a safety thing.
  2. Should the Fire Safety officer call a match, the match is over, and their decision will stand as to the winner/loser of the match. (Usually it’s the bot heading outside, with smoke coming out of it)
  3. Keep your bots turned off, weapons safeties on and the wheels off the ground, when not in the arena.

  • The pits will be outdoors. As such, please bring tables, chairs, sun canopies, sun screen, etc.
  • Each teams pit will be separated by at least one car parking space from all others (8 feet), as indicated above under “COVID COnsiderations”.
  • If you want power at your pit space, please bring an extension cord.

Want to compete but don’t know how to get started? Check out this very basic article on getting going. The Naked Viper kit is designed to supply all of the electronics and mechanicals, other than the chassis, for antweight bots. You’ll also need a transmitter/receiver combo like this, and probably a battery charger like this.
