OVERVIEW

Nightmare on Bot Street 10.30.21

General:

Come see Nightmare on Bot Street for Spooky Fun with Battling Bots!

The founding members of MACROBots (Maryland Area Combat Robotics Organization) and the Maryland Meltdown started putting the group together in 2018 as a way to build STEM interest and self-confidence in their kids. It quickly became apparent that there would be a greater appeal.

As an organization, our focus is going to be to promote a spirit of cooperation and good sportsmanship, with teams helping each other to progress in skill and to keep the fun in the competition. We intend to make open-source all of our designs so that interested participants do not have to start from scratch, and we are also happy to assist in the design and build process for those who need/want it.

Nightmare on Bot Street is another in our lineup of events to advance robotics, the combat robotics sport, and engineering

We want everybody to be able to build, bash, break, and learn.

Nightmare on Bot Street – Event Details:

Unall{0}cated Space, the venue, will have cold water and Gatorade available for the suggested donation of $1 per bottle. Any donation to help the venue is greatly appreciated, and will make holding events there easier in the future.

COVID Considerations:

Due to COVID, there is the very real possibility that the State of Maryland, or Anne Arundel County, may impose restrictions on gatherings, the event is subject to cancellation. As such, no fees will be collected in advance. Please be prepared to pay at the door.

In order to comply with the current COVID rules in Maryland, Anne Arundel County, and the rules of the venue, at the time of this posting (September 21, 2021), please review the following.

  • Please do NOT attend if you are feeling sick, running a fever, or have any other symptoms of COVID.
  • Wear your mask indoors.
  • Stay 6 feet apart.
  • 30 person maximum occupancy in the building, and no limit outside per UAS/Anne Arundel County rules.

Nightmare on Bot Street Check in procedure:

  1. Fill out the Unallocated Space COVID19 Partial Opening Guidance form, including temperatures of all persons in your party. Please leave the thermometer and form where they are located. This can be completed at any time after arrival. (This also takes the place of the UAS Site Waiver.)
  2. Fill out the bot check-in form. This can be completed at any time after your arrival.
  3. Take your bot and the bot check-in form to the check-in station.
  4. At the check-in station, the bot will be weighed, B roll footage taken, and a failsafe check performed. The bot check-in form will be filled out and collected by a staff member of MACRO.

Rules:

  • Please see MACRO Robot Construction Specifications for construction specifications.
  • The least dangerous robot goes in the box first. The most dangerous goes in the box last.
  • The most dangerous bot comes out first, if at all possible, followed by the least dangerous bot.
  • We’ll have someone call the next match and the on-deck match.
  • We will also try to post the current brackets and next fight within the Discord event channel.
  • We’ll have 20 minutes between matches for any one bot, so towards the end, we will likely be having grudge matches to fill time.
  • No late hits. If the other bot is disabled, ask before you hit them again. Basically, be polite.
  • Have fun, play safe.

Safety:

All bots will be required to follow safety rules and pass a safety check.

Safety Rules:

  1. If a battery becomes exposed, the match is over. This is a safety thing.
  2. Should the Fire Safety officer call a match, the match is over, and their decision will stand as to the winner/loser of the match. (Usually, it’s the bot heading outside, with smoke coming out of it)
  3. Keep your bots turned off, weapons safeties on and the wheels off the ground, when not in the arena.

Pits:

  • The pits will be outdoors. As such, please bring tables, chairs, sun canopies, sun screen, etc. (We know of at least one team that plans to pit out of their car.)
  • Each team’s pit will be separated by at least one car parking space from all others (8 feet), as indicated above under “COVID Considerations”.
  • If you want power at your pit space, please bring an extension cord.

Other Info:

Want to compete but don’t know how to get started? Check out this very basic article on getting going.

The Naked Viper kit is designed to supply all of the electronics and mechanicals, other than the chassis, for antweight bots.

You’ll also need a transmitter/receiver combo like this, and probably a battery charger like this.
