The basic concept of a hubmotor for combat robotics is very simple. Instead of a weapon attached to an axle and driven by a motor and belt or similar, the motor is part of the weapon, and the weapon is attached directly to the bell of the motor, and since the motor is an outrunner, the outside of the motor and the weapon mounted to it all rotate.

Even small combat bots can be very destructive and can pack the kinetic energy of a bullet. If you’re just getting started, start with a beginner bot and wait to weaponize. Always use a test box with a bot rated “destructive”. Click here to learn more.

AR500 VS AR600
The most common type of steel for combat robotics weapons are AR500 and AR600.
- AR600 is harder than AR500, so it keeps a sharper edge longer and hits harder—but it’s also more brittle.
- AR500 is tougher and more durable.
If damage is the most critical, consider AR600. Conversely, AR500 is a great choice for both ruggedness and staying power in the ring.
Hubmotor Heaven
HUBMOTOR WEAPONS
The Repeat Robotics hubmotors are mounted to the weapon with screws that hold the blade onto the motor. A Repeat Robotics weapon shaft is also necessary.
The Just ‘Cuz hubmotors have a proprietary shape that locks the blade into the motor. The Sledgehog blade fits the RDY-5022 motor, while the while the Snaggletooth fits the RDY-5536 motor. They are NOT interchangeable.
Newer versions of the 5022 motor do not require the spacers, but they are included with purchase of the 0.125″ Sledgehog blade. Sledgehog is made of AR600 steel.
