Radiomaster MT12 ELRS Radio Controller
The Radiomaster MT12 ELRS radio controller is a modern, high-performance solution for combat robotics and other ground-based RC applications,
combining a wheel-and-trigger surface-style layout with the speed, reliability, and flexibility of ExpressLRS and EdgeTX. This is the same radio John ran and trusted in competition, and his experience was a major factor in our decision to carry it at ItGresa Robotics.
What it is / Who it’s for
The MT12 ELRS is designed for builders who want precise, low-latency control of drive and weapon systems without being locked into proprietary firmware or protocols. Its surface-style wheel-and-trigger format is ideal for combat robots, RC cars, and other ground vehicles where smooth steering, reliable throttle control, and configurable switches matter more than dual-stick aircraft inputs. Includes an ER3C-i ELRS Receiver.
How it works
At its core, the MT12 ELRS uses an internal 2.4GHz ExpressLRS radio module paired with the open-source EdgeTX operating system. ExpressLRS provides fast response times, robust link quality, and modern telemetry support, while EdgeTX allows deep customization of mixes, switches, rates, and logic to match your robot’s control needs. Hall-effect sensors on both the steering wheel and trigger ensure consistent, wear-free input over time.
What you’ll need
The MT12 ELRS is powered by user-supplied batteries. Batteries are not included. The radio supports 2 × 18650 cells, which are widely available and easy to source, or an equivalent 2S 7.4V battery pack. Charging is handled through the built-in USB-C port, supporting convenient bench and pit charging.
Why this controller
Unlike entry-level radios, the Radiomaster MT12 ELRS is built around open standards. You’re not locked into a single ecosystem, and the radio can grow with your builds as your control requirements become more advanced. The compact, ergonomic design makes it comfortable for long sessions at the test box or in the pits, while the standardized button layout and modular switch options make it easy to adapt to different robot configurations.
Safety & best practices
As with any combat robotics control system, always verify failsafe behavior before powering weapons, confirm correct channel mapping, and test range and response in a safe environment. Ensure batteries are in good condition and properly seated before operation, and follow all applicable event safety rules when competing.
Receiver inclusion varies by package and will be clearly stated once confirmed. If a receiver is included, it will be explicitly listed here.

FAQ
What does “surface-style” mean for this radio?
“Surface-style” refers to a wheel-and-trigger control layout, which is commonly used for ground vehicles such as RC cars, crawlers, boats, and combat robots. This layout provides intuitive steering and throttle control compared to dual-stick aircraft radios, making it especially well suited for driving robots in an arena.
Is the Radiomaster MT12 ELRS suitable for combat robotics?
Yes. The Radiomaster MT12 ELRS is widely used by combat robotics builders due to its fast response, reliable ExpressLRS link, and flexible EdgeTX programming. The wheel-and-trigger format works well for precise driving and can be configured to handle additional functions such as weapon enable, direction, or auxiliary controls.
What batteries does the MT12 ELRS use?
Batteries are not included. The MT12 ELRS is designed to run on 2 × 18650 cells, which are widely available and easy to source, or an equivalent 2S 7.4V battery pack. Charging is supported through the built-in USB-C port.
Does this radio come with a receiver?
Receiver inclusion depends on the specific package configuration. This product page reflects the radio itself; receiver details will be clearly stated once confirmed. If a receiver is included, it will be explicitly listed in the “Package Includes” section.
What is ExpressLRS (ELRS)?
ExpressLRS is an open-source 2.4GHz radio protocol known for low latency, strong link reliability, and modern telemetry support. It is widely adopted across RC and robotics communities and integrates well with the EdgeTX operating system used by the MT12.
Can I customize the controls and switches?
Yes. The MT12 ELRS supports configurable switches and control assignments through EdgeTX. This allows builders to tailor steering, throttle, weapon enable, and auxiliary functions to match their specific robot or vehicle setup.
