Schools have been managing safety for as long as there have been schools. Every day, educators make thoughtful decisions about balancing educational value with appropriate safeguards—from deciding whether crayons are suitable for preschoolers to preparing a sixteen-year-old to safely drive two tons of metal down the highway.
Robotics is no different.
The challenge isn’t finding the “safest” robot. It’s choosing the robot that best aligns with your educational goals, your students, your facilities, your budget, and your school’s safety needs.
We’ve designed a safety “Ladder” to help you visualize the range of competitive robotics programs, understand the relative capabilities of each, and identify the appropriate safety measures that will allow your students to participate safely and confidently.
The Ladder of Risk
Not every combat robot carries the same risk. This reference breaks down what actually drives risk, competition type, materials, weight class, and weapon system, and what containment each level calls for. Arena & Containment Classes
Every “Infrastructure” entry above refers to one of the containment classes below. These describe physical barrier requirements, not weight class, the same class can apply to different weight classes depending on what the robot actually does.| Class | Name | Description | Typical Use |

| (non-arena) | Special-Purpose Course | Not a containment structure, a track or maze for non-contact bots | Line followers, maze solvers |
| Class A | Open Platform | No real sides, a low curb (~6″) at most to keep a robot from driving off the edge, not intended to contain impacts | Sumo, pusherbot rings, low-force wedges |
| Class B | Basic Barrier | Simple box or platform with light sides, foamboard/plywood-level construction (Turnabot-style) | Very low-force robots, demonstration/testing |
| Class C | Standard Containment | 1-2 layers of lexan (1/4″+), kickplates, aluminum frame, walls 2ft+, ceiling | Ants, lifters, small spinners, and any weight class needing this level |
| Class D | Heavy Containment | 3/16″+ lexan or 2 layers 1/4″, kickplates, reinforced frame, matching-gauge ceiling (lexan or wood) | Beetles, spinners, beaters, and any weight class needing this level |
| Test Box | Weapon Test Enclosure | A small, fully enclosed box (not a full arena) used to safely spin up, test, or run in a weapon before or between matches, required any time a kinetic weapon is powered on outside of an active, supervised match | Any robot with a kinetic weapon, at any weight class |
